![]() A longing for what the greeks called Eudaimonia. ![]() A gap caused by the lack of struggle and meaning. He is the only person (aside from the savages) in the book that still recognizes the gap in his soul. John on the other hand is not satisfied by this shallow definition. ![]() Mustapha Mondes vision is a world where everyone has everything he wants and noone wants anything that isn't available. To satisfy those needs, not only goods are manufactured in abundance but also the needs are actively designed and restrained. It still mirrors our modern world frighteningly well with people still hunting for beauty, materialistic and sexual pleasure. It displays a world where happiness is secured but only in it's shallowest form. ![]() Happiness is never grand.ĪBNW is one of the books that had the greatest influence on myself as a person. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. And, of course, stability isn’t nearly so spectacular as instability. Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in compari- son with the over-compensations for misery. And if anything should go wrong, there’s soma. They’re well off they’re safe they’re never ill they’re not afraid of death they’re blissfully ignorant of passion and old age they’re plagued with no mothers or fathers they’ve got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about they’re so conditioned that they practically can’t help behaving as they ought to behave. People are happy they get what they want, and they never want what they can’t get. You can’t make fliv- vers without steel-and you can’t make tragedies without social instability. Here is my favourite part Because our world is not the same as Othello’s world. Mustapha Mond's conversation with John towards the end was really interesting. But I think its safe to say that I was wrong. The book by Aldous Huxley was recommended along with 1984, and I thought it couldn't possibly be as good as that.
